Three Maryknoll Sisters From New York Move to Honolulu 73 Years Ago
It was the tumultuous 40s, an era riddled with war and economic depression that created uncertainty and a strong need for social services in Hawaii. It was during this time that Bishop Sweeney invited three Maryknoll Sisters from New York to Honolulu. It was because of their “yes” to help our community, that in 1947 Catholic Charities was officially chartered and named Catholic Social Service.
As we celebrate our 73rd anniversary of serving the Hawaii community we do so in the midst of local, national, and global turmoil. With so many difficult changes that have occurred in our community, we want to recommit to you our pledge to provide social services to all with dignity and compassion- just as we have been doing for the last seven decades. Catholic Charities Hawai‘i is rooted in this community and has served during some of the most difficult times and remains committed in doing so for years to come.
It is through the work of the Maryknoll sisters, and of the many who have supported us in the past 73 years that we are there today, serving tens of thousands of people in our community- providing support and building a bridge to hope.
This month, we will share stories that demonstrate our unfailing commitment and humbly ask that if you find yourself in a position to give, please visit us online. If you can’t give financially, please consider sharing our stories on social media to ensure these stories touch the lives of others.
As always, we are so thankful for your support and donations, especially during this time of tremendous need.
Please consider making a generous donation today to help us continue providing social services to tens of thousands in our community.
