At the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center (LMPSC), a group of senior women is defying age through the art of tap dancing. Led by the passionate Cheryl Feagins and assisted by Naomi Ferreira, the Forever Young Tappers have been meeting for over two years, guided by the belief that “We don’t stop tap dancing because we grow old—we grow old because we stop tap dancing.”
The group, with kupuna aged 73 to 91, has blossomed into a close-knit community where the joy of movement is matched by a deep sense of camaraderie. Each dancer brings something unique to the floor, and together they share not only the rhythm but a strong bond of friendship and mutual support. For many, it’s more than a fitness class—it’s a lifeline, where laughter and shared stories fuel their spirits as much as the tap routines themselves.
The benefits of tap dancing go beyond fun and social connection. The exercise helps kupuna maintain muscle strength, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance balance—crucial for reducing fall risks and frailty. Tap dancing also supports bone strength, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Furthermore, it promotes mental well-being, reducing anxiety, depression, and cognitive decline, which is essential for seniors’ overall health.
During their recent performance at the LMPSC Christmas party, the smiles on the ladies’ faces as they walked off the stage were absolutely priceless, a testament to the joy and fulfillment they find in every tap step. The Forever Young Tappers have become a vibrant, joyful community where each class is a reminder that it’s never too late to move, dance, and live fully. Cheryl Feagins and Naomi Ferreira have created more than just a dance class—they’ve sparked a movement that shows age is truly just a number, and the joy of life and dance knows no bounds.
The Forever Young Tappers is a living testament that no matter how old we are, it’s never too late to keep dancing through life.
