Ruben was born with severe cardiac issues, requiring three heart surgeries. His journey began in the Hale Mālama foster care program, where he found love and care with the Kaneshiro family. At first, the challenges were overwhelming. Ruben was fed through an G tube (gastrostomy tube), often connected to oxygen, and surrounded by machines that filled their living room. Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi’s team was with them every step of the way, offering guidance and support when they needed it most. They never felt alone.
Ruben’s road to healing wasn’t easy, but after a life-changing surgery (even during the uncertainty of COVID!), he began to thrive. Today, at six years old, he is full of joy and energy, running around and filling their hearts with laughter. His strength and happiness have transformed the family in ways they never could have imagined.
Ruben’s story is a true testament to the power of community. It truly takes a village to raise a child, and Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi made that possible. The family is incredibly grateful to the community that supported them and helped Ruben find his forever ohana with the Kaneshiros.
