A Home Away from Homeless“I never thought that I'd be
homeless.” said Theresa. Theresa found herself homeless at the age of
18, drifting from beach to beach, living out of a car with her one
year-old son and a baby on the way. A concerned friend referred her to
Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s Mā‘ili Land Transitional Housing Program.
Mā‘ili Land provided a nurturing environment where she participated in educational, employment and skill building programs that helped her strive toward independence.
Catholic Charities Hawai‘i's transitional housing program offers a home away from homelessness by providing a secure environment that’s stable and effective. It offers families who are homeless or facing homelessness the tools and resources to become self sufficient and find permanent housing and employment.
Through Mā‘ili Land she was connected to other services in the community to help her succeed. “It’s just a like a gateway to better things,” said Theresa. Today, Theresa is employed and resides in her own residence with her children through the assistance of CCH’s Housing Placement Program.
“I’m glad that I didn’t give up,” added Theresa. “When you hear of all these programs and how so many people accomplished their goals through it, you want to be one of those success stories, so I'm proud to say I’m a success story through this program. Catholic Charities helped me a lot. I now feel like I’m at a great place in my life because of Mā‘ili Land.”
