A Caring Touch
Case Management for Seniors Program
Throughout the years, Mrs. J, age 75, has faced many challenges, but she has always found a way to overcome them. Asking for help was not something that she was comfortable with, even after the passing of her husband many years ago.
“I felt that others needed the help more than I did,” she explained, “even though things were hard.”
Mrs. J has lived in an affordable senior housing apartment on a fixed income for several years. Living solely on her social security benefits, Mrs. J was spending 60 percent of her income on rent alone.
After a bout with illness earlier this year, Mrs. J found her medical bills piling up, and her meager social security check could not sustain those bills on top of her monthly expenses. She decided that it was finally time to ask for help and reached out to Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, which provides case management services at her senior housing complex.
Upon reviewing Mrs. J’s expenses, a CCH social worker assisted Mrs. J with finding government services to ease her financial stress, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The social worker also advocated for a rent reduction based on Mrs. J’s current financial situation.
Today, Mrs. J is so grateful for the hand up that she received from Catholic Charities Hawai‘i.
“I have no idea how I would have gotten access to these services without their help,” she expressed. “I don’t even know how to begin to advocate for a rental adjustment.”
These efforts took a heavy burden off Mrs. J’s shoulders, and she feels comfort in knowing she can count on her Catholic Charities Hawai‘i case manager when she needs help.
About Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s Case Management for Seniors Program
As Hawai‘i’s aging population grows, it’s important that seniors be able to maintain their independence in the community and avoid premature institutionalization. Catholic Charities Hawai‘i provides a wide range of senior services that are designed to provide in-home and community based services throughout Honolulu, including professional counseling, assessment of needs, bereavement counseling, referral and coordination to supportive services, and advocacy.
The needs for each senior are unique, and our social workers work diligently toward meeting their needs through service and advocacy. Last year alone, our Case Management for Seniors Program helped more than 574 individuals at nine affordable senior housing apartment buildings on O‘ahu.
